Jules Allen
Although only new to the world of playwriting, Jules Allen is already turning heads. Her debut play, ‘Slipped through the Cracks’, won a multitude of awards.

Jules has been working as a professional actor for the past 5 years and began writing plays in 2016 in the hope of finding a platform for untold
stories. Jules draws on her many lived experiences to form the landscapes of her plays.
Growing up in a multi-cultural family in the 70’s, in the outer suburbs of Melbourne with a Thai mother was no easy feat. As culture would dictate, being a bisexual girl was the first and most defining of struggles. Following a harrowing childhood of sexual abuse and family breakdown, Jules’ late teens were marred by addiction.
At the age of 21, Jules gave birth to her first son and made the decision to turn her life around. She put her adversity to use and went on to Foster 32 children as a single mother and adopted three. Whilst parenting, she achieved a Bachelor of Social Sciences.
Jules’s career as a humanitarian, in Australia and internationally, was recognised in 2017 when she was awarded Alumnus of the Year at Southern Cross University. She was honoured to deliver a TEDx talk in Melbourne 2017 and was featured on Australian Story in 2014.

‘BETTY’
More recently, Jules and a dedicated and incredibly talented team have been working tirelessly on her most recent play, ‘Betty’. ‘Betty’ has been schedules to launch at Theatreworks in February 2021. “Betty’ Is already attracting an enormous amount of attention, bringing the likes of Iain Sinclair and Hannie Rayson to the table for script development and workshopping; both claiming ‘Allen has enormous potential and is a playwright to watch’.

‘Slipped through the cracks’
In 2018 Jules’s debut play, ‘Slipped through the cracks’ drew enormous attention and accolades, taking out four awards at a highly reputable One Act play festival. It took out Best overall play, best writing, best lead actor and Iris Walsh- Howling won best director for her stunning portrayal of this searing piece. ‘Slipped through the cracks’ ran for a full, sold out season; the reviews indicative of it’s success and impact on it’s audiences. It was described as ‘gripping, profound in it’s intimate story telling and deeply moving’. Hannie Rayson, the judge at the One Act Play festival declared ‘Jules Allen was a playwright to watch, one with enormous potential’.
